Foss, Hubert J(ames), English writer on music and composer; b. Croydon, May 2, 1899; d. London, May 27, 1953. He attended Bradfield Coll. In 1921 he became a member of the educational dept. of the Oxford Univ. Press, and in 1924 founded the music dept., which he headed until 1941. He composed 7 Poems by Thomas Hardy for baritone, men’s chorus, and piano; instrumental pieces; songs. He was the author of Music in My Time (1933); The Concertgoer’s Handbook (London, 1946); Ralph Vaughan Williams (London, 1950); also collected and ed. The Heritage of Music, Essays… (2 vols., London, 1927–34). His book London Symphony: Portrait of an Orchestra remained unfinished at his death, and was completed by Noel Goodwin (London, 1954).
