Flummerfelt, Joseph
Flummerfelt, Joseph, American conductor; b. Vincennes, Ind., Feb. 24, 1937. He studied at DePauw Univ. (B.M., 1958), the Philadelphia Cons, of Music(M.Mus., 1962), and the Univ. of 111. (D.M.A., 1971), and also privately with Julius Herford, Nadia Boulanger, and Elaine Brown. From 1964 to 1968 he was director of choral activities at DePauw Univ., and then at Fla. State Univ. from 1968 to 1971. In 1971 he was appointed director of choral activities at Westminster Choir Coll., where he became artistic director and principal conductor in 1982. He also serves as an artistic director of the Spoleto Festival U.S.A. and, from 1971 to 1993, was maestro del coro of the Spoleto Festival in Italy. He likewise was founder-music director of the N.Y. Choral Artists and choral director of the N.Y. Phil. From 1994 to 1999 he was music director of Singing City of Philadelphia.
