Fiedler, (August) Max

Fiedler, (August) Max, German conductor and composer; b. Zittau, Dec. 31, 1859; d. Stockholm, Dec. 1, 1939. He studied with his father (piano), with G. Albrecht (organ and theory), and at the Leipzig Cons. (1877–80). He then was a teacher (from 1882) and director (from 1903) of the Hamburg Cons., and was also conductor of the Hamburg Phil. (1904–08). Subsequently he was conductor of the Boston Sym. Orch. (1908–12) and music director in Essen (1916–33). Among his compositions were a Sym., Lustpiel, overture, piano quintet, string quartet, and piano pieces; songs.
