Farkas, Philip (Francis)
Farkas, Philip (Francis), American horn player and teacher; b. Chicago, March 5, 1914; d. Bloomington, Ind., Dec. 21, 1992. After study with Louis Defrasne in Chicago, he was 1st horn player in the Kansas City Phil. (1933–36), the Chicago Sym. Orch. (1936–41; 1947–60), the Cleveland Orch. (1941–45; 1946–47), and the Boston Sym. Orch. (1945–46). He taught at the Ind. Univ. School of Music in Bloomington (1960–82) and founded his own publishing company, Wind Music, Inc. He also authored The Art of French Horn Playing (1956), The Art of Brass Playing (1962), and A Photographic Study of 40 Virtuoso Horn Players’ Embouchures (1970).
