Expert, (Isidore-Norbert-) Henry

Expert, (Isidore-Norbert-) Henry , eminent French music librarian and editor; b. Bordeaux, May 12, 1863; d. Tourettes-sur-Loup, Alpes- Maritimes, Aug. 18, 1952. He settled in Paris in 1881 and studied with Franck and Gigout. He taught at the Ecole Nationale de Musique Classique (1902–05) and at the Ecole des Hautes Sociales. In 1909 he became deputy librarian and in 1921 chief librarian at the Paris Cons., retiring in 1933. He ed. the valuable collections Les maitres musiciens de la renaissance frangaise (23 vols., Paris, 1894–1908) and Monuments de la musique frangaise au temps de la renaissance (10 vols., Paris, 1924–29; new ed. by B. Loth and J. Chailley, 1958 et seq.). The Assn. des Amis d’Henry Expert et de la Musique Franchise Ancienne was founded after his death and sponsored the publ. of his MS transcriptions as Maitres anciens de la musique frangaise (Paris, 1966 et seq.).
