Eubanks, Robin

Eubanks, Robin, jazz trombonist; brother of Kevin Eubanks; b. Philadelphia, Oct. 25, 1955. At the age of eight, he began playing the trombone and then through high school and college studied theory, harmony, and arranging. After graduating cum laude from the Univ. of the Arts in Philadelphia, he moved to N.Y. From there he was Music Director for Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, and did composing and performing for McCoy Tyner’s Big Band, and Slide Hampton’s Jazz Masters. He toured and recorded with the Rolling Stones, Talking Heads, and Barbara Streisand (on her 1994 tour). He has performed on several television shows and specials, including The Tonight Show, featuring Jay Leno, Saturday Night Live, the Grammy Awards, and Motown at the Apollo, and has worked on several projects for Broadway and film. He is currently a member of Dave Holland’s Quintet. He also leads his own groups, which have toured Europe and Japan. He toured the European Festivals for the month of July 1999 as a member of the Elvin Jones Jazz Machine. He was appointed Assistant Professor of Jazz Trombone at the Oberlin Coll. Cons, of Music (in 1997). He is also on the faculty at the Manhattan School of Music and adjunct faculty at the Univ. of the Arts in Philadelphia. He teaches privately in N.Y. and has taught and delivered seminars at universities and colleges throughout the world, and is a national clinician for Yamaha Musical Instruments. He is a chief proponent in developing the sound and utilization of the electric trombone.
