Ehrling, (Evert) Sixten
Ehrling, (Evert) Sixten, noted Swedish conductor; b. Malmo, April 3, 1918. He studied piano, organ, composition, and conducting at the Royal Academy of Music’s Cons, in Stockholm. After a brief career as a concert pianist, he joined the staff of the Royal Opera in Stockholm as a rehearsal pianist, and made his conducting debut there in 1940. He then took conducting lessons with Karl Bohm in Dresden (1941) and, after the end of World War II, with Albert Wolff in Paris. In 1942 he was appointed conductor in Goteborg; in 1944 he became a conductor at the Royal Opera in Stockholm, where he served as chief conductor from 1953 to 1960. From 1963 to 1973 he was music director of the Detroit Sym. Orch.; then headed the orch. conducting class at the Juilliard School in N.Y. In 1978 he became music adviser and principal guest conductor of the Denver Sym. Orch., and from 1979 to 1985, he was its principal guest conductor; he was also artistic adviser to the San Antonio Sym. Orch. (1985–88). He was chief conductor and musical advisor of the orchs. at the Manhattan School of Music in N.Y. from 1993.
