Eckstein, Pavel
Eckstein, Pavel, Czech musicologist; b. Opava, April 27, 1911. He studied jurisprudence at Charles Univ. in Prague, graduating in 1935; received his musical education there. During the German occupation (1941–45), he was in a concentration camp in Lodz but survived and returned to Prague, where he became active as an organizer of music festivals, an ed., and a writer on music. From 1969 to 1992 he was artistic advisor of the Prague National Theater, and subsequently was chief dramaturg there from 1992. Among his books are Czechoslovak Opera (Prague, 1964) and The Czechoslovak Contemporary Opera—Die tschechoslowakische zeitgenossische Oper (Prague, 1967).
