Dyson, (Sir) George (b Halifax, Yorks., 1883; d Winchester, 1964). Eng. composer, teacher, and organist. Spent 1904–8 in It. and Ger. on Mendelssohn Scholarship. From 1908–37 was mus. master at a succession of Eng. schs. incl. Rugby, Wellington, and Winchester (1924–37). Taught at RCM becoming dir. 1937–52. Comps. incl. In Honour of the City, ch., orch. (1928); The Canterbury Pilgrims, sop., ten., bar., ch., orch. (1929–31); St Paul's Voyage to Melita (1933); The Blacksmiths, ch., orch. (1934); Sym. in G (1937); Quo Vadis (1939); vn. conc.
