Dykema, Peter (William)
Dykema, Peter (William), American musk pedagogue; b. Grand Rapids, Mich., Nov. 25, 1873; d. Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y, May 13, 1951. He studied law at the Univ. of Mich. (B.S., 1895; M.L., 1896), and then took lessons in voice and in theory at the Inst. of Musical Art in N.Y (1903–05) and studied with Edgar Stillman Kelley in Berlin (1911–12). He was music supervisor at the N.Y Ethnical Culture School (1903–13). From 1913 to 1924 he was prof, of music and chairman of the public school music dept. at the Univ. of Wise., and from 1924 to 1939 he was a prof, of music education at Teachers Coll., Columbia Univ. He publ. a number of music handbooks for schools, among them Twice 55 Community Songs (6 vols., 1919–27); School Music Handbook (1931; rev. ed., 1955, by H. Cundiff), Singing Youth (1935), Golden Key Orchestral Series (1937), with N. Church, Modern Band Training Series (1938), and with K. Gehrkens, The Teaching and Administration of High School Music (1941).
