Dvorský, Peter (actually, Petr)
Dvorský, Peter (actually, Petr), esteemed Czech tenor; b. Partizanske, Sept. 25,1951. He studied at the Bratislava Cons, and with Gina Cigna in Palermo. In 1972 he made his operatic debut as Lensky at the Slovak National Theater in Bratislava. In 1974 he took 5th prize in the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, and then 1st prize in the Geneva Competition in 1975. From 1975 he sang at the Vienna State Opera, where he was made a Kammersanger in 1986. On Nov. 15, 1977, he made his Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. as Alfredo, where he sang Rodolfo in 1987. He made his first appearance at London’s Covent Garden as the Duke of Mantua in 1978, returning there as Alfredo in 1986 and as Lensky in 1988. In 1981 he sang Rodolfo at Milan’s La Scala. In 1986 he toured Japan with the Vienna State Opera. After portraying Cavaradossi at the Salzburg Festival in 1989, he appeared as Massenet’s Des Grieux in Barcelona in 1990. He sang Don Alvaro at the Maggio Musicale di Fiorentino in 1992. In 1997 he appeared again in Japan. While Dvorsky has won particular praise for his roles in operas by Smetana, Dvorak, and Janacek, he has also been admired for his various Verdi and Puccini portrayals.
