Dranishnikov, Vladimir
Dranishnikov, Vladimir, Russian conductor and composer; b. St. Petersburg, June 10, 1893; d. Kiev, Feb. 6,1939. He studied at the St. Petersburg Cons, with Essipova (piano), Steinberg, Liadov, and Wihtol (composition), and Nikolai Tcherepnin (conducting). He was employed as a rehearsal pianist at the St. Petersburg Imperial Opera (1914–18); in 1918, became conductor there, earning great esteem for his skill in both the classical and the modern repertoire; he conducted the first Soviet performance of Berg’s Wozzeck, and of numerous Soviet operas. In 1930 he was appointed conductor of the Kiev Opera. He wrote symphonic works and choruses.
