Dräger, Hans-Heinz
Dräger, Hans-Heinz, German-born American musicologist; b. Stralsund, Dec. 6,1909; d. Austin, Tex., Nov. 9,1968. He studied musicology with Blume, Schering, Hornbostel, Schunemann, and Sachs at the Univ. of Berlin (Ph.D., 1937, with the diss. Die Entwicklung des Streichbogens und seine Anwendung in Europa; publ. in Kassel, 1937), completing his Habilitation at the Univ. of Kiel in 1946 with his Prinzip einer Systematik der Musikinstrumente (publ. in Kassel, 1948). While in Berlin, he was active with the State Inst. for German Music Research (1937–38) and at the State Museum of Musical Instruments (1938–39); also was lecturer in organology at the Hochschule für Musik (1939). He was prof. of musicology at the univs. of Greifswald (1947–49) and Rostock (1948–49), at Humboldt Univ. in East Berlin (1949–53), and at the Free Univ. in West Berlin (1953–61). In 1955 he was a visiting prof, at Stanford Univ. He settled in the U.S. in 1961, becoming a naturalized citizen in 1966; he was on the musicology faculty at the Univ. of Austin (1961–66).
