Doni, Antonio Francesco or Anton-franccsco
Doni, Antonio Francesco or Anton-franccsco, Italian writer; b. Florence, May 16, 1513;d. Monselice, near Padua, Sept. 1574. For several years he was a member of the Servite fraternity in Florence; after leaving it in 1539, he led a wandering life as a lay priest. He publ., besides various non-musical treatises, a Dialogo della musica (Venice, 1544; includes a list of 17 composers living in Venice at the time, with works of each) and La libraria (two vols., Venice, 1550–51), containing a description of all publ. and unpubl. musical books in Italian known to him at the time, as well as a list of the music academies then in existence and details of their foundation.
