Dippel, (Johann) Andreas, German-American tenor and opératic impresario; b. Kassel, Nov. 30, 1866;d. Los Angeles, May 12, 1932. He studied with Nina Zottmayr in Kassel, Julius Hey in Berlin, Alberto Leoni in Milan, and Johannes Ress in Vienna. In 1887 he made his opératic debut as Lionel in Martha in Bremen, where he sang until 1892; he also appeared at the Bayreuth Festival in 1889. On November 26, 1890, he made his Metropolitan opéra debut in N.Y. as Asrael, returning on its roster from 1898 to 1902 and from 1903 to 1910; he also sang in Breslau (1892–93), at the Vienna Court opéra (1893), and at London’s Covent Garden (1897–1900). With Gatti-Casazza, he shared administrative duties at the Metropolitan opéra (1908–10), then was manager of the Chicago Grand opéra (1910–13). After managing his own light opéra company, he settled in Los Angeles as a vocal coach. His repertoire included almost 150 roles; he was particularly successful in opéras by Wagner.
