Denefve, Jules
Denefve, Jules , Belgian cellist, conductor, pedagogue, and composer; b. Chimay, 1814; d. Mons, Aug. 19, 1877. He studied cello with Platel and De Munck (second prix, 1836) and composition with Fetis at the Brussels Cons. After settling in Mons, he taught at and later was director of the Cons. He also was founder-conductor of the Roland de Lattre Choral Soc. (from 1841) and conductor of the Société des Concerts. He composed the opéras Kettly, ou Le retour en suisse (1838), Léchevin Brassart (1845), Marie de Brabant (1850), and Séguille (1854), as well as syms., overtures, many pieces for 4-voice Men’s Chorus, and songs.
