DeLio, Thomas

DeLio, Thomas , American composer and music theorist; b. N.Y., Jan. 7,1951. He studied composition at the New England Cons, of Music in Boston (B.M., 1972) and at Brown Univ., in an interdisciplinary program involving music, mathematics, and visual art (Ph.D., 1979, with the diss. Structural Pluralism). He taught at Clark Univ. (1977), the New England Cons, of Music (1977–80), and the Univ. of Md. (from 1980). He was co-founder and co-ed, of the journal Sonus (1980–85); his articles have appeared in various other art and music journals. His research focuses on open structures and mathematical concepts in composition. As a composer, he has created live electronic sound installations and computer-aided compositions; among his WORKS are Text for Piano (1985), Against the silence… for Percussion and Tape (1985), and contrecoup… for Chamber Ensemble (1989). He publ. Circumscribing the Open Universe (Lanham, Md., 1983); ed. Contiguous Lines: Issues and Ideas in the Music of the ’60s and 70s (Lanham, Md., 1985).
