Daniel, Oliver
Daniel, Oliver , American music administrator and writer on music; b. De Pere, Wise., Nov. 24, 1911; d. Scarsdale, N.Y, Dec. 30, 1990. He attended St. Norbert Coll. in West De Pere (1925–29), then studied piano in Europe and at the New England Cons, of Music in Boston. He was active as a pianist and as a piano teacher until becoming music director of the educational division of CBS radio in 1942; he was head of the concert-music division of BMI (1954–77) and was associated with the International Music Council of UNESCO (from 1958). With Stokowski, he founded the Contemporary Music Soc. in 1952; later was active with various other organizations, including the American Music Center, the Charles Ives Soc., and the American Composers Orch. He wrote a column for the Saturday Review (1957–68); also contributed to other journals. He ed. various collections of works by early American composers and publ. the study Leopold Stokowski: A Counterpoint of View (1982).
