Cooper, Emil (Albertovich) (b Kherson, Russia, 1877; d NY, 1960). Russ.-born conductor. Début Odessa 1896, Kiev Opera 1900–4. Cond. f.p. of The Golden Cockerel, Moscow 1909, and its f.p. in London 1914. Cond. first prods. by Russ. cos. of the Ring and Die Meistersinger. Cond. for Diaghilev operas, Paris 1908 and 1909, incl. Boris Godunov with Chaliapin. London début 1913. Cond. Leningrad PO 1921–2. Left Russia 1922. Mus. dir. Riga Opera 1925–8. Cond. at Chicago Opera 1929–32, and at NY Met 1944–50, where he introduced Peter Grimes (1948). Cond. Montreal Opera Guild from 1950.
