Conus, Georgi (Eduardovich)
Conus, Georgi (Eduardovich) , Russian composer, pedagogue, and music theorist, brother of Julius Conus; b. Moscow, Sept. 30, 1862; d. there, Aug. 29, 1933. After studies with his father, he was a student of Pabst (piano) and Arensky and Taneyev (composition) at the Moscow Cons., where he then taught theory (1891–99). He was prof. of composition (1902–06) and director (1904–05) of the music and drama institute of the Moscow Phil. Soc. After serving as prof. of composition (1902–19) and rector (1917–19) at the Saratov Cons., he was a prof, at the Moscow Cons, (from 1920). Among his pupils were Scriabin, Vasilenko, Medtner, Kabalevsky, and Khachuturian. He originated a theory of metric analysis (metrotectonism, i.e. measured structure), which he outlined in his writings (Moscow, 1932, 1933). He composed symphonic scores, a ballet, piano pieces, and songs.
