Chinese wood block

Chinese wood block. Oblong block of wood, 7′ or 8′ long, with slots cut in it. Struck with stick of a snare drum gives a hard, hollow tone. Other names are clog box and tap box. Used in jazz and by 20th-cent. composers, e.g. Lambert in Rio Grande, Walton in Façade, Prokofiev in 5th and 6th Syms., and Cage in Amores.
