Cebotari, Maria (b Kishinev, Bessarabia, 1910; d Vienna, 1949). Austro-Russ. soprano. Actress at Moscow Art Th. 1926. Opera début Dresden 1931. In Dresden co. 1931–6, Berlin 1936–44, Vienna 1946–9. Début CG 1936 with Dresden co., sang there with Vienna Opera 1947. Created role of Aminta in Die schweigsame Frau (1935). Appeared in films. Outstanding singer of Mozart, Puccini, and Strauss. Sang often at Salzburg Fest.
