Cassado (Moreau), Gaspar
distinguished Spanish cellist; b. Barcelona, Sept. 30, 1897; d. Madrid, Dec. 24, 1966. He was the son of Joaquin Cassado (Vails) (b. Mataró, near Barcelona, Sept. 30, 1867; d. Barcelona, March 25, 1926), a well-known organist and composer. Gaspar Cassado studied cello with Casals. He toured Europe, and made his U.S. debut in N.Y. on Dec. 10, 1936; made a U.S. tour in 1949. He composed a Cello Sonata, a Cello Concerto, and other pieces for his instrument. His Catalonian Rhapsody for Orch. was performed by the N.Y. Phil, on Nov. 8, 1928. He also made arrangements for cello and orch. of a Mozart horn concerto and Weber’s Clarinet Concerto.
