Cabel, Marie (-Josèphe)
Cabel, Marie (-Josèphe), Belgian soprano; b. Liège, Jan. 31, 1827; d. Maisons-Laffitte, May 23, 1885. She was a pupil of Bouillon in Liège, then studied with F. Cabel and L.J. Cabel, becoming the latter’s wife in 1847. She subsequently completed her training at the Paris Cons. In 1849 she made her operatic debut at the Paris Opéra- Comique in Halévy’s Val d’Andorre. After appearances in Brussels, Lyons, Strasbourg, and London, she returned to Paris as a member of the Opéra-Comique in 1856, where she created Meyerbeer’s Dinorah (April 4, 1859). She retired in 1877. Cabel’s roles in French opera were particularly admired.
