Brodie, Paul (Zion)

Brodie, Paul (Zion), noted Canadian saxophonist and teacher; b. Montreal, April 10, 1934. He studied saxophone with Larry Teal at the Univ. of Mich, in Ann Arbor (M.Mus., 1958) and with Marcel Mule in Paris (1959), making his N.Y recital debut in 1960 at Town Hall. He taught briefly at the Royal Cons, of Music of Toronto (1959–60), then became founder-director of the Brodie School of Music and Modern Dance in Toronto (1961–79); he was also on the faculty of the Univ. of Toronto (1968–73). In 1969 he helped to found the World Saxophone Congress. From 1972 to 1979 he toured with his own Paul Brodie Saxophone Quartet, and then devoted himself to touring as a soloist around the globe. From 1982 he taught at York Univ.
