Brey, Carter
Brey, Carter, American cellist; b. Glen Ridge, N.J., Sept. 19, 1954. He was a student of Laurence Lesser (1972–74) and Stephen Kates (1974–76) at the Peabody Inst. in Baltimore, and of Aldo Parisot (1977–78) at Yale Univ. After winning first prize in the duo category with pianist Barbara Weintraub at the Munich International Competition in 1978, he took third prize in the first Rostropovich International Cello Competition in Paris in 1981. In 1982 he won the Young Concert Artists Auditions and made his formal debut at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. In 1984 he received an Avery Fisher Career Grant. From 1983 he pursued a career as a soloist with the major orchs., as a recitalist, and as a chamber music player. He became principal cellist of the N.Y. Phil, in 1996.
