Arnold, Carl

Arnold, Carl, German organist, conductor, and composer, son of johann gottfried arnold; b. Neukirchen, May 6, 1794; d. Christiania, Nov. 11, 1877. He studied piano with C. A. Hoffmann and Aloys Schmitt in Frankfurt am Main, and with J. A. André and J. G. Vollweiler in Offenbach. Following tours in Germany, Poland, and Russia as a concert artist, he went to Berlin in 1824. His opera Irene was premiered there in 1832, but it was not a success. In 1835 he became music director in Münster. In 1847 he went to Christiania as director of the Phil. Soc, and also became organist at Holy Trinity Church in 1857. His son, Karl Arnold (b. Berlin, June 8, 1824; d. Oslo, Aug. 9, 1867), was also a cellist who was a member of the royal chapel in Stockholm.
