Applebaum, Edward

Applebaum, Edward, American composer; b. Los Angeles, Sept. 28, 1937. He had piano lessons in his youth, and later studied composition with Lazarof and Foss at the Univ. of Calif. at Los Angeles (Ph.D., 1966). In 1969 he was composer-in-residence of the Oakland Sym. Orch. In 1971, became a prof. of theory and composition at the Univ. of Calif. at Santa Barbara. From 1985 to 1987 he was composer-in-residence of the Santa Barbara Sym. Orch., and then of the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara (1988). In 1989 he became prof. of composition and director of the new-music ensemble at Fla. State Univ. in Tallahassee. He served as dean (1991–92) and as prof. of music (1991–94) at Edith Cowan Univ. in Perth, Australia.
