Angel, Marie

Angel, Marie, Australian soprano; b. Pinnaroo, June 3, 1953. Following training in Australia, she joined the Opera Factory Zurich and made her London debut with the company as Handel’s Galatea in 1980. From 1982 to 1992 she was a member of the Opera Factory London, with which she appeared in such roles as Monteverdi’s Poppea and Euridice, both of Gluck’s Iphigenias, Mozart’s Countess, Donna Anna, and Fiordiligi, Denise in Tippett’s The Knot Garden, and Pretty Polly in Birtwistle’s Punch and Judy. In 1986 she created the role of the Oracle of the Dead in Birtwistle’s The Mask of Orpheus at the English National Opera in London and in 1991 Morgana Le Fay in his Gawain at London’s Covent Garden. In 1994 she created the role of Esmerelda in Rosa by Louis Andriessen in Amsterdam. She married David Freeman in 1985.
