Anchieta, Juan de

Anchieta, Juan de, Spanish composer; b. probably in Urrestilla, near Azpeitia, 1462; d. Azpeitia, July 30, 1523. He was related to Ignatius Loyola. In 1489 he entered the service of Queen Isabella as a singer in the court chapel. Upon her death in 1504, he entered the service of her daughter, Joanna, consort of Philip the Fair, serving as chaplain and singer. He also held a benefice at Villarino (from 1499), was rector of the parish church of S. Sebastian de Soreasu in Azpeitia (from 1500), and was Abbot of Arbos (from 1518). In 1519 he was pensioned by the court of Charles V. Among his works were masses, Magnificats, and motets for large choral forces, as well as 4 secular songs, including Dos ánades.
