The Wind That Shakes the Barley
The Wind That Shakes the Barley ★★★ 2006
Loach's take on the Irish fight for independence from Great Britain, which resulted in the partitioning of the country. In 1920, Damien O'Donovan (Murphy) is expecting to study medicine in London, but repeated run-ins with British soldiers find him joining his activist brother, Teddy (Delaney), in the IRA. However, following the Anglo-Irish Peace Agreement, the brothers find themselves on opposite sides—Teddy is willing to support an Irish Free State while the zealous Damien continues pursuing the dream of a totally independent country. Loach is unafraid to show the ruthlessness on both sides and the bitterness and tragedy that still lingers. 127m/C DVD .
