Undercurrent ★★½ 1946

Minnelli's only foray into film noir is highgloss melodrama based on the novel “You Were There” by Thelma Strabel. Innocent Ann (Hepburn) marries Alan (Taylor) after a whirlwind romance and then discovers he's not the man she thinks. He may be a murderer and there's some chicanery involving his brother Michael (Mitchum) and the family business. Taylor's in a rare bad guy role while Hepburn seems too sophisticated for her naive wife and Mitchum just seems tired. 116m/B VHS, DVD . Katharine Hepburn, Robert Taylor, Robert Mitchum, Edmund Gwenn, Marjorie Main, Clinton Sundberg, Dan Tobin, Jayne Cotter; D: Vincente Minnelli; W: Marguerite Roberts, Edward Chodorov, George Oppenheimer; C: Karl Freund; M: Herbert Stothart.
