South Sea Woman
South Sea Woman ★★ ½ 1953
Nightclub tootsie Ginger Martin (Mayo) testifies at the court-martial of Marine Sgt. James O'Hearn (Lancaster). Seems he and buddy Pvt. Davy White (Connors) met the stranded Ginger in Shanghai just before Pearl Harbor. O'Hearn tries to prevent the impulsive White from marrying her and the trio wind up on the Vichy French island of Namou, where O'Hearn discovers some Nazis plotting evil. There's derring-do and various heroics but O'Hearn doesn't make it back to his unit in time and gets accused of desertion—hence the trial. Good action and a light touch—there's more comedy than angst. 99m/B DVD . Burt Lancaster, Virginia Mayo, Chuck Connors, Barry Kelley, Hayden Rorke, Bob Sweeney, Leon Askin; D: Arthur Lubin; W: Earl Baldwin, Edwin Blum, Stanley Shapiro; C: Ted D. McCord; M: David Buttolph.
