Ripley's Game
Ripley's Game ★★★ 2002 (R)
Tom Ripley (Malkovich) is still a sociopath, but now he's older, more refined, icier, married, and (not surprisingly) successful. When he overhears an insult by the host, Trevanny (Scott), of a dinner party, he decides to make him pay. His opportunity comes when British gangster Reeves (Winstone) asks him for an anonymous assassin to take out a Russian mobster. Ripley, knowing Trevanny is terminally ill and broke, suggests him as the hit man. Trevanny accepts, but is betrayed by Reeves, which conflicts with Ripley's sense of honor, who then intervenes. Malkovich is perfect as the steely Ripley, and has good support from the rest of the cast, as well as an enjoyably intricate plot. 100m/ C VHS, DVD . John Malkovich, Dougray Scott, Ray Winstone, Lena Headey, Chiara Caselli; D: Liliana Cavani; W: Liliana Cavani, Charles McKeown; C: Alfio Contini; M: Ennio Morricone.VIDEO
