The Ring 2002
The Ring ★★½ 2002 (R)
American adaptation of the novel and film that took Japan by storm in 1998. Upon hearing of an allegedly lethal videotape in urban legend fashion, teen Katie (Tamblyn) gets her hands on a copy and watches it with three of her friends. Immediately after viewing the tape, she gets a call telling her that she will die in exactly one week. A week later all four teens are dead. Katie's reporter aunt Rachel (Watts) tries to get to the bottom of the mystery, but has only one week to do so after also viewing the tape. She is also racing to save her son (Dorfman) and ex-husband Noah (Henderson), who she has rather stupidly exposed to this Memorex of Mayhem. While the look is suitably atmospheric and creepy, the plot stretches plausibility to the breaking point. 115m/C VHS, DVD .
