The Phantom of the Opera 1998
The Phantom of the Opera ★½ Dario Argento's Phantom of the Opera; Il Fantasma dell'Opera 1998 (R)
Campy excess (and lots of gore) overwhelms Gaston Leroux's often-filmed chiller. This Phantom (Sands) doesn't have a facial disfigurement and goes unmasked but he's weird nonetheless. Abandoned as a baby, he's raised by rats (ewwww) beneath the Paris Opera where he becomes smitten by young singer, Christine (Argento), and does his best to make her his alone. 100m/C VHS, DVD . IT Julian Sands, Asia Argento, Andrea Di Stefano, Nadia Rinaldi, Coralina Cataldi-Tassoni, Istvan Bubik, Zoltan Barabas; D: Dario Argento; W: Dario Argento, Gerard Brach; C: Ronnie Taylor; M: Ennio Morricone.
