The Mark of Zorro ★★★½1940

The dashing Power swashbuckles his way through this wonderfully acted and directed romp. He plays the foppish son of a 19th-century California aristocrat who is secretly the masked avenger of the oppressed peons. Bromberg plays the wicked governor, with the beautiful niece (Darnell) beloved by Power, and Rath-bone is supremely evil as his cruel minion. Lots of swordplay with a particularly exciting duel to the death between Rathbone and Power. Based on the novel “The Curse of Capistrano” by Johnston McCulley. Remake of the 1921 silent film and followed by a number of other Zorro incarnations. 93m/B VHS, DVD . Tyrone Power, Linda Darnell, Basil Rathbone, Gale Sondergaard, Eugene Pallette, J. Edward Bromberg, Montagu Love, Janet Beecher; D: Rouben Mamoulian; W: John Taintor Foote; C: Arthur C. Miller; M: Alfred Newman.
