The Last of theMohicans ★★★ 1992 (R)

It's 1757, at the height of the French and English war in the American colonies, with various Native American tribes allied to each side. Hawkeye (Day-Lewis), a white frontiersman raised by the Mohicans, wants nothing to do with either “civilized” side, until he rescues the beautiful Cora (Stowe) from the revenge-minded Huron Magua (Studi in a powerful performance). Graphically violent battle scenes are realistic, but not gratuitous. The real pleasure in this adaptation, which draws from both the James Fenimore Cooper novel and the 1936 film, is in its lush look and attractive stars. Means is terrific in his film debut as Hawkeye's foster-father. Released in a letterbox format to preserve the original integrity of the film. 114m/C VHS, DVD . Daniel Day-Lewis, Madeleine Stowe, Wes Studi, Russell Means, Eric Schweig, Jodhi May, Steven Waddington, Maurice Roeves, Colm Meaney, Patrice Chereau, Pete Postlethwaite, Terry Kinney, Tracey Ellis, Dennis Banks, Dylan Baker; D: Michael Mann; W: Christopher Crowe, Michael Mann; C: Dante Spinotti; M: Trevor Jones, Randy Edelman. Oscars ‘92: Sound.
