Henri Langlois: The Phantom of the Cinematheque
Henri Langlois: The Phantom of the Cinematheque ★★★ Le Fantome D'henri Langlois 2004
Documentary follows the career of the eccentric, longtime curator and film preservationist of the Cinematheque Francaise, founded by Langlois and Georges Franju in 1936. A fanatical collector, Langlois began by preserving silent films and hiding banned works from the Nazis during their occupation of Paris. Later, Langlois offered screenings of his collection, which heavily influenced such budding directors as Godard and Truffaut. Langlois also had a fractious relationship with the French government, who provided a subsidy and tried to exert control over the organization. A somewhat lengthy labor of love from director Richard; French with subtitles. 128m/B DVD. D: Jacques Richard; C: Jerome Blumberg; M: Nicolas Baby, Liam Farell.
