Agnes Conway (Skinner) is the strong-minded daughter of a Newcastle shop-owner in class-conscious England in December, 1913. Managing her unhappy father's store, Claire waits on two members of the wealthy Farrier family and is soon drawn into their lives when the younger Farrier son, Charles (Atterton), falls in love with her, despite their class differences. But the Conway's have their own class problems—Agnes' younger sister Jessie becomes pregnant by a lower-class lad and her father's fury is murderous. Still as Agnes' love for Charlie grows, she must also deal with the outbreak of WWI, which will bring changes for all concerned. 156m/C VHS, DVD .
