Jurado, Katy (1924–2002)

Best known for her Golden Globe-winning role in the Hollywood western High Noon (1952), Mexican actress Katy Jurado (January 16, 1924–July 5, 2002) also starred in many other Hollywood and Mexican films before her death in 2002 at the age of seventy-eight. Born María Cristina Estela Marcela Jurado García in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, she was nominated for an Academy Award for her work opposite Spencer Tracy in Broken Lance (1954), one of only three Hispanic actresses to be nominated. Before coming to Hollywood in 1951, she had already worked with noteworthy Spanish director Luis Buñuel and won three Ariel awards, one of the highest honors in Mexican cinema. Contrary to the career paths of many of her Hollywood colleagues at the time, she did not sign a studio contract, instead preferring to work independently on projects such as Marlon Brando's One-Eyed Jacks (1960); Man from Del Rio (1956), with Anthony Quinn; and Stay Away Joe (1968), with Elvis Presley. She returned to live in Mexico in 1968, where she continued working as an actress on television and earned lifetime achievement awards from the Santa Fe Western Festival (1981) and the Mexican Film Promotion Trust (1992). Upon her death, after six decades in cinema, she had more sixty films to her credit.
