Hamilton, Anne (1636–1716)

Duchess of Hamilton. Born on December 24, 1636 (some sources cite 1634); died on October 17, 1716; daughter of James Hamilton (b. 1606), 1st duke of Hamilton, and Mary Hamilton (1613–1638); married William Douglas (1635–1694), 1st earl of Selkirk, 3rd duke of Hamilton (r. 1660–1694), on April 29, 1656; children: James Douglas-Hamilton (1658–1712), 4th duke of Hamilton; William Hamilton; Charles Hamilton (1662–1739), 2nd earl of Selkirk; John Hamilton (1665–1744), 3rd earl of Selkirk; Archibald Douglas-Hamilton (1673–1754, governor of Jamaica); George Hamilton, 1st earl of Orkney (r. 1696–1737); Basil Hamilton (1671–1701); Mary Hamilton (1657–died before 1683); Catherine Hamilton (d. 1707, who married John Murray, 1st duke of Atholl); Susannah Hamilton (d. 1736, who married Charles Hay, 3rd marquess of Tweeddale); Margaret Hamilton (d. 1731).

Anne Hamilton was born in 1636, the daughter of Mary Hamilton and James Hamilton, the first duke of Hamilton. It was because of her petition that her husband William Douglas, royal commissioner under William III, became the third duke of Hamilton.
