Dorcas (fl. 37 ce)

Biblical woman. Name variations: called Tabitha by the Jews. Flourished around 37 ce; a Christian woman of Joppa, a Mediterranean seaport town.

Dorcas, whose name means gazelle in Greek, was a widow woman of Joppa who sewed and made clothes for the poor. Upon her death, her grieving friends sent for Jesus' disciple Peter, who laid his hands on her and restored her to life. Her revival caused many to convert to the teachings of Jesus.
