Batavia (bətā´vēə), city (1990 pop. 16,310), seat of Genesee co., W N.Y.; inc. 1915. It was laid out in 1801 by Joseph Ellicott, agent for the Holland Land Company. Batavia produces a variety of light manufactures. The city was a center of the Anti-Masonic movement in the 19th cent. Attica prison, site of the 1971 uprising, is nearby.
