Campania Region of sw Italy on the Tyrrhenian Sea, including the provinces of Avellino, Benevento, Caserta, Napoli and Salerno. The capital is Naples. It is a mountainous area with fertile plains yielding agricultural products such as wheat, potatoes, fruit, tobacco, flowers and wine. Area: 13,595sq km (5249sq mi). Pop. (2001) 5,782,244.
