Northern Territory Territory in n central Australia bounded by the Timor and Arafura seas (n), and the states of Western Australia (w), South Australia (s) and Queensland (e); the capital is Darwin. In 1863 it was annexed to South Australia but in 1911 was under the control of the federal government. In 1978, it achieved self-government. The territory lies mostly within the tropics. The coastal areas are flat with offshore islands, and the region rises inland to a high plateau, the Barkly Tableland. In the mainly arid s are the Macdonnell Ranges and Ayers Rock. Today there is little farming but some government-aided stock-breeding. Manganese ore, bauxite and iron are mined. Area: 1,347,525sq km (520,280sq mi). Pop. (2000 est.) 196,300.
