Āsava

Āsava or Āśrava (Pāli/Skt., ‘outflow’, as from a sore). In Buddhism, a group of basic defects or defilements which are the cause of repeated rebirth. There is an original list of three which is often supplemented by a fourth. Among Jains, āśrava is the incursion of consequence from karma, which has to be recognized by appropriate attention before it can be eliminated.
