Calvé (Rosa-Noémie) Emma [ Emma Calvet de roquer] (b Decazeville, 1858; d Millau, 1942). Fr. soprano particularly noted for perf. as Carmen. Début Brussels 1881; La Scala 1887; CG 1892; NY Met 1893 where first sang Carmen. Created roles of Anita in La Navarraise and Suzel in L'amico Fritz. Announced retirement from opera after singing in 1,000th perf. of Carmen at Paris Opéra-Comique in 1904, but sang at Manhattan Opera House, NY, in 1907 and 1908. Gave concerts in USA until 1927.
