P.S. ★★ 2004 (R)

Linney is a treasure but the same can't be said about this film, which is based on coscreenwriter Schulman's novel, “P.S. I Love You.” Louise (Linney) is a quiet divorcee who works as a Columbia University admissions officer. She's intrigued by a young grad school applicant who bears the same name, F. Scott Feinstadt, as her lost first love. The young man (a game Grace) is bewildered but flattered by this attractive, lonely woman's attentions. F. Scott is basically a cipher, since it's Louise's emotional baggage we're supposed to be interested in, and she's got a lot of it (dysfunctional family, sex addict ex, backbiting best friend). Unfortunately, neither the movie nor the viewer can really handle all that weight without buckling. 97m/C DVD . US Laura Linney, Topher Grace, Paul Rudd, Lois Smith, Gabriel Byrne, Marcia Gay Harden; D: Dylan Kidd; W: Dylan Kidd, Helen Schulman; C: Joaquin BacaAsay; M: Craig (Shudder to Think) Wedren.
