Saxe-Coburg-Gotha the name of the British royal house 1901–17. The name dates from the accession of Edward VII, whose father Prince Albert, consort of Queen Victoria, was a prince of the German duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. During the First World War, with anti-German feeling running high, George V changed the family name to Windsor.
